Baseballs have remained relatively unchanged in the history of baseball. Other than being made of cowhide covers rather than horsehide covers, you're hitting the same ball your Dad was. But now, "EIT" balls contain a thin polymer layer under the leather. This helps resist moisture, and maintain firmness. By including this polymer layer the ball is also longer lasting by maintaining compression levels after multiple uses. This layer also prevents balls from gaining weight and losing performance in different humidity levels.
